What foods contain lots of triglycerides that should be avoided or eaten sparingly?
The Culprits
Here is a detailed list of foods that contain a significant amount of triglycerides and are therefore determined to be unhealthy, especially for those suffering from elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels:
- Sugary or processed beverages and foods such as cakes, energy bars, date syrup, maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, and candy. This also includes jams, milkshakes, and ice cream.
- Foods that include saturated fats or trans fats, such as fried foods, egg yolks, pizza, waffles, sausages, red meat, hard cheeses, butter, margarine, and high-fat dairy products.
- Foods high in sugar content where corn syrup, glucose, sucrose, fructose, and maltose appear as the first ingredient on the list. In other words, this component is the most significant and the maximum amount in that product. A word of note: Fruits with a high glycemic index, and many fruit juices, are also high in fructose.
- Foods high in carbohydrates, such as cereals, pasta, pastries, white bread, white rice, semolina-based foods, and foods using lots of cornstarch.
It is important to consult a health specialist before beginning treatment for high triglyceride levels. In addition to maintaining a proper nutritional diet and avoiding certain foods that contain excessive amounts of triglycerides, other factors can elevate triglyceride levels. Excessive alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, and certain medications like birth control pills can also elevate triglyceride levels.
